Psalm 142 (NIV): 1 I cry out to the LORD with my voice; With my voice to the LORD I make my supplication. 2 I pour out my complaint before Him; I declare before Him my trouble. | 3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, Then You knew my path. In the way in which I walk They have secretly set a snare for me. 4 Look on my right hand and see, For there is no one who acknowledges me; Refuge has failed me; No one cares for my soul. | 5 I cried out to You, O LORD: I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living. 6 Attend to my cry, For I am brought very low; Deliver me from my persecutors, For they are stronger than I. | 7 Bring my soul out of prison, That I may praise Your name; The righteous shall surround me, For You shall deal bountifully with me.”
Like David as he prayed and cried out in need of God to rescue him from the cave, how many times do we call on God in need of His protection from our circumstances? David knew that God’s altar was the appropriate place to lay his burdens down and understood the importance of praising God’s name even from the confinement of prison… he recognized that no man’s plan could come against God’s protection.
Most of us do not have enemies that seek to capture us… we may not have situations that seem as serious as David’s. However, we do have people that will constantly try to throw stumbling blocks to prevent us from making it to our destination. We do have troubles and we do sometimes feel weak and vulnerable and all alone. Through our cries, we have to learn to understand that God knows best and that His name deserves praise no matter how difficult out lives may get. When we glorify Him through our struggles, He will give us peace and allow our righteousness and favor to shine through even our darkest circumstances.
