The Blessing of Little

Posted by Kathleen Robertson at 8 April, 2009, 11:02 am

If you love money, you will never be satisfied; if you long to be rich, you will never get all you want. It is useless. The richer you are, the more mouths you have to feed. All you gain is the knowledge that you are rich. Workers may or may not have enough to eat, but at least they can get a good night’s sleep. The rich, however, have so much that they stay awake worrying.” – Ecclesiastes 5:10-12 [show] He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep. (ESV)

We have all made the mistake of comparing our lives to the lives others live. We believe the more a person has, the less he has to worry about; we allow ourselves to be convinced that a life of “more” is a better life. How much more wrong could we be?! The life of a person enslaved by money is a miserable one. God’s Word says that you cannot worship Him while trusting in money to secure your future. Those who love money do not understand this; their money keeps them in abundance… makes them comfortable… but creates a situation where God is unnecessary. When they are on “top” they have no need for praise and worship or to glorify His name. When they fall is when they beg for mercy.

Our society has placed so much emphasis on status, brands, cliques… God did not promise an uneventful or even pleasant trip; He promised to go before us and ensure that we make it to our destination. He never once in His Word promises that we will always be comfortable here, but we have the promise that we will never suffer or need again once we are with Him. There are those who are generous, who help others, who put their money to good works for the Kingdom. They will never be without; they will not lie awake at night and worry because they know they cannot outgive God – they will continue to be blessed immeasurably because GOD’S GLORY is on their hearts.

I pray that you never feel less-favored because you don’t have things to give. If you stand as a witness for Christ… if you make God’s business YOUR business… if you give thanks to Him for what He has done… if you reach out to others and share the Word with them… if you live your life for God’s glory, you have given more than you can ever imagine: you’ve given YOURSELF… a living sacrifice to a perfect, unfailing God. You will be rewarded according to His riches!
